Description

Tender apples spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg nestle beneath a crisp oat topping. After baking, warm caramel is drizzled over the hot fruit for a sweet, buttery crunch that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl combine apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice; toss to coat.
  3. Spread the apple mixture in a 9×9-inch baking dish and drizzle half of the caramel sauce evenly over the apples.
  4. In another bowl mix oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt; stir in melted butter until coarse crumbs form.
  5. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  7. Remove from oven and drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the hot crisp.
  8. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweetness.
  • Prepare the oat topping ahead and keep chilled until ready to bake.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to three days.
