Description

Hand-rolled cinnamon swirls filled with tender apple chunks in a buttery brown sugar spiced mix, these rolls emerge golden and gooey, finished with a silky vanilla glaze that melts into every crevice.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 medium apples peeled cored and diced
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp softened unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl sprinkle yeast over warm milk and let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add 1/3 cup granulated sugar melted butter salt and egg to the yeast mixture and whisk until smooth.
  3. Gradually stir in flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until elastic then place in a greased bowl cover and let rise 1 hour until doubled.
  5. While the dough rises prepare the apple pie filling by combining diced apples 1/3 cup granulated sugar cornstarch 1 tsp cinnamon lemon juice and 1/4 tsp salt in a saucepan over medium heat and cook until thickened then let cool.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it into a 16 by 12 inch rectangle.
  7. Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle brown sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon evenly.
  8. Spoon cooled apple filling over the butter sugar layer leaving a 1/2 inch border.
  9. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge pinch to seal and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  10. Place the rolls cut side up in a greased 9 by 13 inch pan cover and let rise 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake rolls for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Meanwhile whisk powdered sugar vanilla and milk until smooth then drizzle over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

  • Rolls are best served warm for maximum flavor.
  • Dough can be refrigerated overnight for a slower rise.
  • Substitute brown sugar for granulated in the filling for deeper flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat before serving.
